Academic Integrity

The Law School is committed to the highest standards of academic and professional integrity. Part of its mission is to train students in the demanding ethical requirements of the practice of law. That process begins with this primer on academic integrity.

Honor Week

Each year the Law School celebrates a week dedicated to the contemplation of legal and non-legal ethics. The speakers, presentations, and other events of the week are designed to inspire reflection about integrity, professionalism, and the other ideals that characterize the Law School community and the greater legal profession.

Annual Leadership Retreat

Over 40 Duke Law current and aspiring student leaders are selected each year to attend the Leadership Retreat sponsored by the law firm of White & Case LLC. The annual retreat emphasizes leadership values through thematic activities, discussions and professional speakers.

Dedicated to Durham

Twice a year, members of the Duke Law School and Duke Medical School communities combine with students from across Duke University's graduate and professional schools and programs to tackle community service projects in Durham.

Community Service Board

The Duke Bar Association’s Community Service Board organizes community service projects throughout the year, including Fall and Spring Blood Drives and canned food drives.

Legal Writing

Learning to write like a lawyer is perhaps the greatest challenge of legal education. The writing faculty support Duke Law students in all of their writing endeavors, helping them to develop and perfect the skills necessary to produce top-quality legal writing. The Legal Writing website provides information about the writing faculty, legal writing opportunities, links to exercises, and more.

Pro Bono

The Duke Law School Pro Bono Project began at Duke Law School in 1991 - one of the earliest formal law school pro bono programs in the country. The Pro Bono Project connects volunteer Duke law students with attorneys in nonprofit and governmental organizations as well as with attorneys engaged in private pro bono practice. Students help those in need of legal assistance - predominantly at locations in North Carolina but in some cases reaching nationwide or internationally.

David Cooke '07

Cooke describes community service as a calling. I'm from a single parent home," said the native of East Flatbush, Brooklyn. I come from a tough environment, where fatherlessness was the norm. But I had a great mom, and I've been very fortunate. That's why I have a heart to give back and to mentor."

Since 2001, the UNC-Chapel Hill graduate has served as executive director of an educational intervention program, the Youth Life Foundation of the Triangle. Located in the East Cornwallis Public Housing Community near downtown Durham, the program offers parenting and money-management classes, GED classes for parents, and a teen leadership club.
