Duke Sports & Entertainment Law Alumni Series: Careers in Sports & Entertainment Law Duke Law School – Room 3037 The first Sports & Entertainment Law Society meeting of the year will feature the first in a year-long series of presentations by Duke Law alumni on their careers in the fields of sports or entertainment. Kevin Cuddy (L’00), a sports attorney at Ropes & Gray, will discuss and take questions regarding his career path to sports law, as well as his area of emphasis, college athletics. Information will also be provided on various events and programs that SELS will be holding over the course of the upcoming year, and on how students can get more involved in the organization. The Beauty of Bets: Wagers as Compensation for Professional Athletes Duke Law School – Room 3037 Join us as FCC Commissioner Robert McDowell discusses his views on the important and timely topic of media ownership issues. Lunch will be provided. IP Society Sixth Annual “Hot Topics” Symposium Duke Law School The IP Society and the Sports & Entertainment Law Society co-sponsor the afternoon panel of the Sixth Annual “Hot Topics” Symposium. A distinguished group of panelists will discuss the legal issues involved in the rise of internet video file sharing services like YouTube and Bit Torrent. Please register no later than February 21 at 3 PM at http://www.law.duke.edu/student/act/intprop. Registration is free, and though SELS is co-sponsoring only the afternoon panel, we encourage you to attend the entire symposium. Fourth Estate Under Fire Duke Law School – Room 3037 A panel including Duke Law Prof. Erwin Chemerinsky, Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press Executive Director Lucy Dalglish, Vinson & Elkins media litigator Thomas Leatherbury and Los Angeles Times legal affairs reporter Henry Weinstein will discuss recent developments in law affecting the news media, including such high profile cases as the jailing of former New York Times reporter Judith Miller and sentences given to two San Francisco Chronicle reporters for refusing to testify in the BALCO steroids case. Prior restraints, freedom of information and the recent intersection of criminal law and press coverage in other high profile cases will be covered by the panel, to be followed by Q&A. They all listen to Dr. Allen Herskhowitz of the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). Come hear about NRDC's innovative "green" partnerships with the entertainment and sports industries, and how these deals are doing big things for the environment. There’s No Business Like Show Business: A Conversation with Legendary Broadway Producer Manny Azenberg Duke Law School – Room 4045 Join us for lunch and conversation with Manny Azenberg, a legendary Broadway producer with more than 65 Broadway productions to his name. Mr. Azenberg will discuss his career and the unique facets of the entertainment business as they relate to the theater. Since 1972, Mr. Azenberg has produced all of Neil Simon’s plays on Broadway, including The Sunshine Boys, Brighton Beach Memoirs, and Lost in Yonkers, which won 1991 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. He was most recently represented on Broadway by Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple, starring Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick. His stage productions have earned a total of 134 Tony Award nominations and have won 41 Tony Awards. He currently serves on the American Theatre Wing’s Tony Awards Administration Committee, and has taught a seminar at Duke University for the past eighteen years. "The Real World: Duke Law" Duke Law School – Room 3041 Davis Mallory, cast member on “The Real World: Denver”, will talk about his experiences on reality television, and on the legal issues he encountered in coping with newfound fame. From the NBA to the ABA: Len Elmore on Law, Leadership and a Little "March Madness" Duke Law School – Room 3041 "March Madness" just ended, and it's time to ease our way back into the law. Join Len Elmore, ESPN commentator and attorney for LeBoeuf, Lamb, Greene & MacRae, as he discusses his life and career straddling the fields of sports and the law. Lunch will be provided. Hoop Dreams: How Sonny Vaccaro Revolutionized the Business of Basketball Duke Law School – Room 3041 Sonny Vaccaro, the trailblazing shoe company executive who created the high school summer basketball scene and signed many of the game’s greatest stars to endorsement contracts, including Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant, will discuss his career and future goals. Vaccaro, who has worked for Nike, Adidas, and Reebok, will highlight the structure of endorsement deals as well as his plans to launch a national basketball academy.
