National Moot Court Competition
Selection Process

If you are interested in being selected as a member of the 2003-2004 Duke Law team to the National Moot Court Competition, please complete, sign, and submit a Statement of Interest (detailed below) to Nicole Rittenhouse's mailfolder no later than Friday, April 11, 2003.
Each year, the Moot Court Board sends two teams of three 3L Board members to the Nationals Competition, which is held each fall and is considered to be the most prestigious interscholastic competition in the country.  The decision as to which Board members will make up the two teams is made by the Faculty Advisor and the Chair(s).
Any Board member who is interested in participating on the Nationals Teams must submit a signed Statement of Interest to the Chair(s) by the designated due date (April 11, 2003).  This statement should not be more than one page double-spaced, and should include the following information:
  • The Board member’s expected course load for the fall semester;
  • Any other major time commitments or obligations of the member (e.g., journal membership and expected amount of work involved, law school or outside employment, family obligations);
  • Any other information that the member feels might be helpful in making the team selections.
The selection of team members will be based on the following criteria, in descending order of importance:
  1. Interscholastic competition experience;
  2. Interscholastic competition results;
  3. Hardt Cup/Dean’s Cup/Jessup Cup results/rankings;
  4. Quality of practice rounds;
  5. Quality of briefs;
  6. Comments and feedback from coaches;
  7. Scheduling conflicts and heavy time commitments;
The Chairs will have read every competition brief submitted during the year, and will attend at least one practice round for each competition team, in order to gather enough information and exposure to make the selection process as fair as possible.
