Miss the alumni weekend tribute to Professor Emeritus Mel Shimm? Watch it online

The Law School honored legendary Professor Emeritus Melvin G. Shimm with the formal announcement of an endowed professorship in his name at a dinner that for many was the emotional high point of Alumni Weekend. Now, a RealVideo presention of Shimm's remarks from the April 20 dinner are available online.

Shimm came to the Law School in 1953 and has influenced generations of alumni, some 90 percent of whom attended the school during Shimm's tenure.

The Law School seeks to raise $1.5 million to endow the Melvin G. Shimm Distinguished Professorship. Named professorships are one of the highest honors accorded a professor, and having chaired professorships is critical to the Law School's ability to retain its most productive faculty members, and to recruit new faculty.

During the April 20 dinner, Shimm recalled meeting with Dean Katharine Bartlett more than a year ago to discuss plans to raise money for an endowed chair. Ever modest, Shimm told the Dean he feared it was too ambitious a fundraising goal.

"So I said to her, 'Perhaps an endowed footstool rather than an endowed chair would be more in order," Shimm quipped.

Shimm said he considers the professorship a "most glorious capstone" to his career and thanked those who have supported it. Shimm's colleagues among the Law School faculty have been particularly generous, contributing about half of the total raised to date.

"I'm especially gratified that so many colleagues, alumni and friends have sufficient regard for me to contribute to a project of this sort," he said. "And it is especially rewarding to know that in some enduring way my name, and one hopes, some of the principles I sought to infuse my teaching with, will become a permanent part of the Law School."
