Law School Welcomes joint-degree "summer starter" students Duke Law School on June 4 opened its doors to 50 rising first-year law students who are pursuing master's degrees in addition to their JD degrees and, thus, can use a head start. Most of the double-degree students are chasing the JD/LLM in International & Comparative Law, but others are pursuing master's degrees in such disciplines as public policy, economics, philosophy, English & psychology. The 28 men and 22 women students represent 36 undergraduate institutions in 24 states. They include six Phi Beta Kappa members, four founders of companies, a pastor, a marathoner, a belly dancer and a member of the New England Bike Patrol. Sixteen students are fluent in second languages, from Spanish to Thai. Orientation emphasized the importance of professionalism in creating a respectful environment both here at the Law School and in career settings from court room to conference room. Dean Katharine Bartlett asked students to consider, "What is professionalism?" in her remarks and others addressed issues of academic integrity, ethics, civility and respect. Orientation for students beginning in Fall 2001 - up to 160 first years are expected - will follow the same theme. Related Links: |
