Justin Miller Awards

May 9 2002

The First Annual Justin Miller Awards highlight a full slate of events for Graduation 2002. The awards are named in honor of Justin Miller, dean of the Law School from 1930-34 who, among other accomplishments, is credited with opening the Law School to women and emphasizing the qualities that make Duke an exceptional place to study law.

Awards will be presented in categories of leadership, integrity, citizenship and intellectual curiosity. A selection committee will choose award winners from a pool of graduating students nominated by students in any class at the Law School. Each recipient will receive a plaque, and a book in the Law Library will be dedicated on his or her behalf. A large plaque with the names of the award winners will be displayed next to the portrait of Dean Miller.

Winners will be announced at the Graduation Gala on May 9, a dinner, slide show and and dance party that kicks off Graduation Weekend 2002. Other events planned for the weekend include a blue grass BBQ, candlelight courtyard dinner and outing to a Durham Bulls baseball game.

The Duke Law School Hooding Ceremony Reception and Celebration will be held in Cameron Indoor Stadium at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 11. Alfred P. Carlton, president-elect of the American Bar Association, is the keynote speaker for this event. A reception at the Law School will follow.

Duke University's Commencement will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 12.
