The First Annual Justin Miller Awards highlighted a full slate of events for Duke Law School's 2002 Commencement. The awards are named in honor of Justin Miller, Dean of the Law School from
1930-34 who, among other accomplishments, is credited with opening the Law School to women and emphasizing the qualities that make Duke an exceptional place to study law.
Awards were presented in categories of leadership, integrity, citizenship and intellectual curiosity. This year's winners were announced at the Graduation Gala on May 9:
Citizenship: Corey Ciocchetti
Leadership: Marcella Harshbarger
Intellectual Curiosity: Daniel Foster
Integrity: Carl Carl
Other weekend events included a blue grass BBQ, the Faculty Awards, a candlelight courtyard dinner and outing to a Durham Bulls baseball game.
The Duke Law School Faculty Awards are given at the discretion of the faculty in their relevant teaching areas. This year's winners were announced Saturday:
Administrative Practice and Government Regulation: Matthew D. Field
Advocacy: Leonard Garside and Amy Richardson
Business Organization and Finance: Heather Bell and Stephen Smith
Commercial Transactions and Bankruptcy: Venus Springs
Criminal Law and Procedure: Albert Kovacs
Dispute Resolution: Shannon Stevenson
Family Law: Erin Bradham and Katherince Saitas
International, Transnational and Comparative Law: Sarah Pfuhl
Intellectual Property and Technology: Lisa Sharrock
Personal Injury: Holly Caldwell
Pro Bono Service: Jennifer Mellon
Property: Chris Hayes and Andrea Treece
Public Service: Kim Bart and David Kim
Tax and Estate Planning: Patricia Schatzlein and David Shuford
Law School Community Award: Steven Mesnick
The Duke Law School Hooding Ceremony was held in Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday, May 11. Alfred P. Carlton, president-elect of the American Bar Association and a partner with the law
