Rare Books Policy

Books from the collection are available for use in the Library between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday - Friday. Assistance with rare books is provided at the Reference Desk. Upon request, staff will retrieve books from the Special Collections Room by staff and check them out. No more than three titles will be checked out to one person at the same time. The Library will hold identification for all users, other than Law School faculty, until all books are returned.

Normally, rare books and other materials from the special collections should be used in the Library Reading Room at the tables in sight of the reference and circulation desks. Users with special projects requiring extensive use of the collection may request advance permission from a reference librarian to work in the Rare Books Room. Rare books may not be used in the presence of food or drink, including spill-proof cups. Those working with rare books should use only pencils, rather than pens or other writing instruments.

Rare books may not be photocopied by users. In special circumstances users may request from Reference Services that photocopies be made by library staff.
