Academic Sites & Publications

  • Duke Law and Technology Review - The Duke Law and Technology Review provides thoughtful and in-depth coverage of the latest law and technology issues. The Reviews focus is student written pieces called "ibriefs," focusing on current intellectual property topics that are roughly10-12 pages in length. New ibriefs are posted weekly during the school year.
  • The Filter - A monthly e-mail newsletter by Harvard's Berkman Center for Internet & Society, The Filter newsletter provides the latest news on Internet issues through the eyes of leading experts, scholars, and researchers.
  • Franklin Pierce Law Center, Intellectual Property Mall - This web site is highly recommended as a good starting point for conducting general intellectual property research. The web site contains links to Congressional Research Service documents on intellectual property law and selected legislative histories for the Patent Act of 1952 and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998. Although difficult to navigate, the IP Mall "Web Links by Topic" contains a plethora of information and links to various specialties in intellectual property law.

U.S. Government Sites

  • United States Copyright Office - This web site, the official U.S. government web site for copyrights, contains a number of informative circulars and brochures on various aspects of copyright law. The site also includes a helpful "New and Pending Legislation" section that links to full-text U.S. House and Senate bills pertaining to intellectual property law. The site also contains a searchable database of copyrighted works, which contains records of copyright registrations and ownership documents since 1978. Note, however, that this database is not comprehensive in scope.
  • United States Patent and Trademark Office - The official U.S. government web site on patents and trademarks is an excellent resource for researching patent grants, patent applications and trademark registrations. The USPTO web site also contains many essential reference sources and manuals geared towards the practitioner. The patent grants database contains images of U.S patents issued since 1790 and the full text of all patents issued since 1976. A new patent applications database contains full text and images of all patent applications published since March 15, 2001.
  • U.S. Department of Justice, Computer Crime & Intellectual Property Section - This web site is organized into computer crime (hacking), intellectual property crime and cybercrime documents. The site features a personalized portal for lawyers interested in cybercrime research. The web site provides a comprehensive collection of policy, case law, guidance, laws and documents pertaining to cybercrime.

International Organizations

  • European Patent Office - This web site contains patent decisions from the European Patent Office Boards of Appeal. The site links to the Online European Patent Register (epoline), which contains all published European patent applications and published international applications (PCT) for a European patent in one or more member states of the European Patent Convention.
  • World Trade Organization ("WTO") - The World Trade Organization (WTO) is the only global international organization dealing with the rules of trade between nations. Through the WTO's Trade- Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights Agreement (TRIPS Agreement), the WTO sets standards, enforcement procedures and dispute resolution for intellectual property issues for all WTO member nations. The above link takes you directly to the WTO TRIPS Agreement materials and includes links to TRIPS news, dispute settlements and historical documents.
  • World Intellectual Property Organization ("WIPO") - WIPO contains the Collection of Laws for Electronic Access (CLEA) database. This database includes full text, intellectual property legislation from a large number of countries, including countries from the European Community, as well as all treaties administered by WIPO. All laws in CLEA are translated into English.

  • Intellectual Property Law Research Guide (Duke Law Library)
  • IP @ the National Academies - The National Academies are advisors to the U.S. government on science, technology and health-related issues. Their Intellectual Property web site contains a number of interesting reports on various intellectual property law issues. The site is organized by topic and by sector.
  • Law.com - The Law.com's IP Law Practice Center is a practice-oriented site for recent developments in intellectual property law. The site includes case summaries and news stories. Certain parts of the site require a paid subscription.
