LLM alumni offers insights on opportunities and challenges for foreign lawyers in US legal market
LLM alumni Helle Weeke '91, John Curry '05, and Jean-Gabriel Peuchaud '07 offered advice on Friday, October 31 to current LLM candidates interested in careers in the U.S. legal market. The panelists took varied career paths and worked in different legal sectors ranging from commerical real estate to international development, yet they all stressed the significance of networking and good grades from LLM studies. Ms. Weeke, principal development specialist at DAI (Development Alternatives, Inc.) also spoke with Duke JD students about lawyer's role in international development by sharing her experience of supporting Vietnam's legal governance transformation when she was stationed in Vietname for the USAID-funded STAR project for purpose of moving Vietnam towards accession to the WTO from 2002-2007.
Duke Law Hong Kong alumni reunion with Dean Horowtiz on July 4
The Hong Kong alumni reunion was held on Friday, July 4, at the Presidents' Room of the American Club, which is on the 48th floor of the IFC Building and offers a panoramic view of the harbor, Kowloon, and Hong Kong Island. Rita Pang (JD ) hosted the very elegant eleven course dinner, which was attended by most Duke Law alumni in the area. Dean Horowitz and Professor Don Horowitz attended the reunion and provided an update on the Law School. Duke international alumni returned for Reunion 2008
Many LLM alumni attended Duke Law School Alumni 2008 Reunion on April 12. It was the 10th reunion of the Class of 1998. We were extremely proud of the many 1998 graduates who attended the reunion.
Gabriela Jijon (LLM 07) participates in panel discussion of pro bono in law firms
Gabriela Jijon came back to Duke Law School as a panelist on April 10 to share her experience in pursuing pro bono work while working at law firms. Jijon, an Ecuadorian lawyer and an LLM graduate of Class 07 is now a foreign attorney at White & Case New York office. The panel discussed on how to pursue meaningful pro bono work in law firms as young associates and provided advice on balancing pro bono interests with firm life and work. Also participated in the panel were Noah Clements (JD 05), an associate with Sidley Austin DC office and two 3L JD students.
Dean Horowitz visits Taiwan and meets alumni in March 2008
A large gathering of Law School alumni in Taipei met for a wonderful reception and multi-course dinner at the Far Eastern Plaza Hotel on Tuesday, March 25. The event also included Dr. Andrew Huang and his wife who have had a long-time association with the Duke Medical Center. Professor Don Horowitz was in Taiwan to deliver several lectures at National Taiwan University sponsored by the Shih Ming-teh Foundation. Dean Judy Horowitz visited law firms where several Duke Law graduates work and spoke on studying law in the U.S. to a full classroom of students at National Taiwan University, where Andrew Jen-Guang Lin (SJD '97) teaches courses in corporate and securities law. Special thanks go to Amy Wen-Yueh Chin (LLM '91) and her colleagues at LCS & Partners for making the arrangements for the alumni event and to all the alumni who joined the dinner.
