PHILIP C. JESSUP MOOT COURT COMPETITION

The Jessup Moot Court Competition is the most renowned international law moot court competition conducted in English. In 2000, the Duke Jessup Team, represented by Jessica Richman, Lisa Hall, Shelly Martin, and Steve Martin, won the Eastern Regional Championship and the U.S. National Championship, before finishing 6th in the world championship. Only 12 American law schools actually advance to the international competition, where teams from 50 countries compete in the preliminary international competition but only 16 teams advance to the elimination rounds.
Lisa Hall Only two U.S. teams can advance to the final 16, where they then compete head-to-head with each other. In the international rounds, Duke had a perfect 4-0 record in the preliminaries. Duke then defeated Fordham to advance to the quarterfinals, where they lost a closely fought round to Ireland. In addition to the U.S. Championship and International Quarterfinalist Awards, the team was recognized for having the 7th best-written briefs in the world.
