Event Recap

Approximately 75 people met in Geneva, Switzerland from July 17-20 in support of Duke Law School. Dean Katharine Bartlett and the Board of Visitors, chaired by Peter Kahn ’76, held their first international meeting for parts of two days and hosted a gathering of international alumni. International alums now number more than 800, about 10 percent of the Law School's graduates.

Among its activities, the Board paid an oversight visit to the summer Duke-Geneva Institute in Transnational Law. Course work is delivered by a combination of Duke and University of Geneva Law faculty, as well as faculty from other universities, and the program enrolls approximately 75 students. The Board also toured Old Geneva, took an evening cruise on Lake Geneva to Hermance, and visited the Chateau de Vullierens.

The Law School teamed with the Fuqua School of Business for programming, which included a keynote address by Law Professor Jim Cox and panels on global capital markets, the International Court of Arbitration for Sport, and a panel on genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. Dean Bartlett also gave a State of the School address, featuring many highlights from the past year. Participants had a wonderful time, and discussion already has commenced about when and where the next international gathering of alums and the Board might convene.

“This first international gathering was successful well beyond our expectations,” Kahn said. “The Board of Visitors had a series of very productive meetings, the academic seminars were challenging and stimulating, and the wonderful setting made for great interaction between the domestic and international alumni, including those from the Business School. With Duke’s emphasis on international programming, hopefully this will be the start of regular oversight visits abroad.”
