Experience:
- Professor of Law, Duke University School of Law, Durham, North Carolina, July 1996-present; July 1991-August 1993. Teaches criminal law, legal ethics, a seminar on negotiation and mediation, and a seminar/clinic on the death penalty. Distinguished Teacher, 1993.
- Partner, Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering, Washington, D.C., 1993-1996; 1982-1991. Litigated a wide range of cases including criminal, civil, natural gas regulatory, administrative, employment discrimination (both plaintiffs and defendants) and various civil rights actions. Appeared as trial and appellate counsel in numerous state and federal courts, and counsel of record in the United States Supreme Court. Served as mediator in several complex employment discrimination cases involving both public and private employers. 1987 NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund Pro Bono Award for contribution to enforcement of civil rights laws.
