Al Adams, who chairs the Real Estate Group at Sutherland, Asbill and Brennan, is resident in the firm's Atlanta office, and practices primarily in the areas of real estate and creditors' rights, where he represents foreign and U.S. investors, lenders and developers in connection with virtually every type of real estate project.

Al has worked extensively in the acquisition and development area and on mortgage and joint venture financing of retail and other commercial projects. He has also developed considerable experience in real estate workouts, foreclosures and bankruptcy reorganizations.

Al is a former Chair of the Real Property Section of the State Bar of Georgia; he has also been the Co-Chair of the State Bar of Georgia's Committee on Legal Opinions in Real Estate Transactions. He has been named to The Best Lawyers in America for the years 2003-2008 in the area of Real Estate Law. Al has also been recognized in Chambers USA America's Leading Business Lawyers, 2003-2008, as one of only five real estate lawyers in Georgia to be top ranked in Band 1, and in Georgia Trend Magazine as one of "Georgia's Legal Elite" for the years 2006-08. He was named a "Georgia Super Lawyer" in the area of Real Estate for the years 2004-2008, and in 2007 and again in 2008 he was also named one of the "Top 100 Georgia Attorneys" by Atlanta Magazine. He was also named to the annual PLC Which Lawyer? Yearbook for Real Estate in 2008. Al is a Fellow in the American College of Mortgage Attorneys and is a member of the International Council of Shopping Centers, the Urban Land Institute and the National Association of Industrial and Office Parks.

Al has spoken frequently at seminars such as the Georgia Real Property Institute and ICSC Law Conference and at other continuing legal education seminars on topics such as retail finance, development and leasing, real estate workouts and creditors' rights, commercial real estate sales and acquisitions, partnerships and joint ventures.

Al received his J.D, with distinction and elected into the Order of the Coif, from Duke University School of Law in 1974, and his A.B.. from Duke University in 1970. While attending law school, he served as administrative law editor of the Duke Law Journal. Mr. Adams has continued to participate in the life of the Law School by serving on our Board of Visitors since 2000.
