Lecturing Fellow
Mr. Welty holds dual degrees from Duke, receiving his J. D., with highest honors, from Duke Law School and his M. A. in Economics from Duke University in 1999. While in Law School, he served as
executive editor of the Duke Law Journal. Following graduation, he was a law clerk to Chief United States District Judge N. Carlton Tilley, Jr., in the United States District Court for the Middle
District of North Carolina.
Mr. Welty left a large North Carolina firm to open his own practice in Durham in March 2003. He defends federal criminal cases and capital cases at the trial, appellate, and post-conviction levels, and is a member of the Criminal Rules Committee for the United States District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina. He also handles cases in the field of animal law and serves on the Legislative Committee of the North Carolina Task Force on Animal Fighting.
