ELPS Moot Court: School Discipline, Education, and Fundamental Rights in NC

March 15, 2010 • 12:15 PM • Law School 4047

Duke Law professor Jane Wettach and 2L Andrea Hamilton will argue the upcoming NC Supreme Court case of King v. Beaufort County in a practice moot court round. The case asks whether, under the NC constitution, a complete denial of education as a result of a long-term suspension must be reviewed under the strict scrutiny standard. The case arose after two high school sophomores in Beaufort County, NC received a long-term suspension for fighting on campus after school and were not offered any alternative education. Prof. Wettach will be arguing this case before the NC Supreme Court on March 22nd. The event is sponsored by the Education Law and Policy Society (ELPS).
