Web Site Maintenance and Design

Drafted May 1, 2003, updated May 21, 2007

The Web Services group of the Educational Technologies department maintains the Duke Law Web site and Web pages for departments and affiliated centers and programs. In this role, Web Services determines, in conjunction with the Communications Office, appropriate Web design schemes, xhtml standards and forms of Web interactivity for the Law School website.

For accessibility and security reasons, all xhtml and scripting code on the Duke Law Web server must be approved by Web Services and Computing Services.

Affiliated centers and programs may use outside parties to design and provide their Web pages, but should consult Web Services before contracting with outside parties. Web Services may not maintain sites not meeting our technology and standards requirements.

Wpk

All new and redesigned Web pages are to be added to Duke Law's content management system, (known as "wpk") allowing for easy content maintenance by site owners and custodians.

Any alterations to the templates must be approved by the Communications Office and Web Services for look-and-feel and usability reasons.

Content

Departments and affiliated centers and programs are responsible for the timeliness and accuracy of the content on their Web pages.

Web Services and the Communications Office may from time to time make suggestions about the organization of these pages in order to improve compliance with best-practice Web design principles and to ensure consistent messaging, but departments and affiliated centers and programs bear responsibility for generating the information that their Web pages contain.

Departmental Contacts

Every department, center or program should designate a contact person for Web issues who will work with the Communications Office and Web Services on Web page development. Web Services is available to train departmental contacts in the use of wpk, which enables departments to make routine changes to their Web pages. Contact webupdates@law.duke.edu or talk to any of the Web Services staff about setting up personalized training for you situation.
