Blackboard provides our online course management system.

  • If you need immediate blackboard assistance please notify webupdates.
  • If you would like to learn how to manage your own blackboard course site please contact Wayne Miller

What is Blackboard?

Blackboard is an easy-to-use university wide system for managing courses. With blackboard you can:

  • provide notices and announcements to students
  • post documents, handouts, and presentations
  • set up forums for moderated course discussion
  • manage your content from any computer 24 hours a day

Why does the University Use Blackboard?

As the web became more prominent, more professors were requesting sites - or setting up on their own - to provide course material online. With growing demand, the university decided to implement a unified strategy for managing online course material:

  • provide a consistent interface across Duke departments
  • provide an easy way for faculty, and faculty support staff, to manage courses
  • integrate with the university's user authentication system
  • restrict access to individuals registered for the course

How Do I Use Blackboard?

A site for each blackboard course is automatically set up by the campus and configured by our web services staff prior to the start of each semester. To view the courses that are available to you log into courses.duke.edu with your university NetID and Password.

If you need assistance, faculty support staff are trained in using blackboard. Additionally, Wayne Miller is available to meet with any instructor wishing to learn blackboard.

Below are some easy to follow tutorials for managing your blackboard course site:
