Professor George Gopen holds regular office hours for consultations with students on style, mechanics, and argument structure in specific writing projects.
How can a writing consultation help me?
Professor Gopen can advise you about any of your law school-related writing, including first year LARW assignments. He consults on issues of grammar, clarity, style, argument structure, and rhetorical strategies, but does not proofread, edit, cite check, or assist in analyzing substantive legal issues. Professor Gopen cannot guarantee better grades or help you contest a grade.
How long does a session last?
Generally, meetings last about 20 minutes. If you need more time, it's advisable to schedule several appointments.
What should I do to prepare for the session?
Bring a clean copy of your writing project. It may also be helpful to bring the assignment and a list of specific questions or concerns about the draft. (Note: "Can you take a look at the overall structure?" is not a specific question. Instead, try to narrow your concern: "I am concerned that the topic sentences in section I.A. are not strong enough.")
How do I schedule an appointment?
Sign up for an appointment on the schedule outside Professor Gopen's office, in Room 3025. Up to three people at a time can see Professor Gopen. Professor Gopen is available at the law school from 10:00-1:00 on Wednesdays.
Who is the writing consultant?
George Gopen is Professor of the Practice of Rhetoric at Duke University, where he also holds appointments in the English Department and the Law School. He teaches courses in the rhetorical analysis of music, poetry, and non-fiction. He acts as a writing consultant to law firms, medical/scientific companies, and government agencies on matters of professional writing.
