The Law of the Political Process

This course surveys the law governing elections, politics, and access rights to democratic political institutions. Topics covered include voting rights, redistricting, campaign finance reform, deference and entrenchment, and laws governing the political parties. Students will be introduced to the web of constitutional, federal, and state laws governing the political process, with particular attention to the history of the development of the theories of democracy underpinning legal decisions. It is a 3 credit hour course, meeting twice a week. Grades will be based on an in-class final examination (85%) and class participation (15%).
