Environmental Advocacy Outplacement

This outplacement course will assign students either to the Southern Environmental Law Center ("SELC") in Chapel Hill or Environmental Defense ("ED") in Raleigh for a semester. Each student will be expected to devote approximately 100 hours of work with his/her agency and will be required to complete a tutorial, journal, and 15-page-minimum research paper relating to the outplacement assignments. All outplacement work will be supervised by attorneys at SELC and ED, as well as by adjunct professor Steve Roady, who will also review the written components to ensure compliance with ABA guidelines.

SELC assignments could include work on cases that are in active litigation, or discovery; they also could include work on cases that are being developed or are in administrative proceedings. The SELC docket typically contains cases that address water pollution, air pollution, wetland destruction, transportation planning, and forest management.

ED often is closely involved in the administrative and legislative sectors of North Carolina government; it is therefore possible that students assigned to the Raleigh office could be working on matters that are not only in court, but also are in the General Assembly or before State administrative agencies. The ED docket often includes ocean conservation, regulation of farming practices, and control of industrial water pollution.
