Theological Dimensions of the Law
A legal system inevitably overlaps with systems of belief and value, usually but not always termed religious, which claim to provide an ultimate valid construction of reality and a finally determinative set of values. Historically, most cultures have recognized this overlap by enlisting the law. It is arguable that the United States has attempted to do neither. This course will examine Western religious and theological reflections on the nature and legitimacy of law and politics and on the appropriate relationships between law and religion.
