Computer Services CD-ROM
The CD-ROM we've given you contains installation programs for the below applications and utilities and may be used with Windows XP Professional or Windows 2000. Windows XP Professional and Windows 2000 are the only computer operating systems Computing Services supports on student computers. The software is divided into two groups: recommended programs, which you should install immediately, and optional programs, which you may choose whether and when to install.
Using the CD-ROM
- Start your computer.
- With Windows running, insert the CD-ROM in your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
- In a moment the main menu should appear. If the menu does not appear, select Start | Run and enter the command "d:autorun." Then select OK.
- The menu will display. The Main Menu includes links to a program installation menu among other menus. That menu in turn includes links to run the installation program for each of the above programs.
- We recommend you accept the default settings for each program you choose to install.
Recommended Programs
- Adobe Reader 6
You'll find Adobe PDF files used on the law school's web site and on thousands of others. Acrobat files are used to present an online view similar to the original printed document. Install Adobe Reader after installing your choice of web browser(s). - Novell NetWare Client
After you've installed this program you can log into the Student Research Network over a remote Internet connection, as well as when you are directly connected to our Ethernet network in the law building. The default installation automatically configures the client to access the Student Research Network file server. If prompted, select "Typical Installation." For detailed instructions please read "Quick Guide to Installing the Novell NetWare Client.” Please note that once you install the client its login screen will replace the Windows login screen. You can set your computer to automatically login to Windows by using the “Setup Windows Autologon” item on the Recommend Programs menu. - GroupWise 6 Client
The native GroupWise client enables full functionality, including the scheduler. If Microsoft Outlook (the full Outlook program, not merely Outlook Express) is installed on your computer, after you install GroupWise you will need to set Outlook to use the Outlook settings. Do this on the Mail and Fax control panel applet. - McAfee VirusScan
This is a must-have. Exposure to viruses is unavoidable in today's interconnected world. The installation will configure VirusScan to check for new virus definition files each time you start the computer when it has an Internet connection. - Microsoft Office Converter (for Reading WordPerfect Files)
The Converter Pack contains several text converters and image filters that will allow you to open files created with other applications, most notably, WordPerfect. The menu item will connect you to Microsoft’s download site.
Optional Programs
- Mozilla Web Browser
Microsoft Internet Explorer likely is already installed on your computer. If you do not have version 6 you may install it from the CD. You also may install Mozilla, as well as the newer Mozilla browser, Firefox. There is also a link to download the Opera browser. - FireFox Browser by Mozilla
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 6
This likely is already installed on your computer, but you may use the CD to update an older version. - WinZip 9
Windows XP has built-in ZIP support, but if you’d like to use a third-party application, this one is recommended. - Sun StarOffice
StarOffice is a multi-platform office productivity suite compatible with all major file formats such as Word and WordPerfect. - F-Secure 5.3
This program allows you to open SSL secured remote terminal sessions with Unix and Linux - RealOne Player and Quicktime
These, along with Windows Media Player, which is already on your Windows computer, will let you play the media file formats commonly found on the Internet. - Duke VPN Client
Many resources, such as research databases, are available only to computers on Duke’s network. The VPN client makes your computer appear to be on Duke’s network regardless of which ISP you are using. Install the client by selecting it from the Optional Programs Menu. When you run the client it asks you to login with your university NetID and password. Turn off the program when you do not need it, as it will slightly reduce browser performance. - Spybot Search & Destroy
This program will help remove and protect from spyware, adware and other malware. You may install it the CD-ROM. You may download a complimentary program, Ad-Aware, from http://www.lavasoft.de.
These programs are distributed to you under site licenses granted the university and the school of law.
