What is NetReg?
NetReg is short for "network registration." It is the process for giving your computer a network address and allowing you to use Duke Law's computer and internet access network.
Why register my computer?
Primarily to improve security of our network. When your computer is registered, your computer's network interface physical address will be associated with your university NetID. Then, if OIT determines your computer is acting as if it has been hacked or has malware running on it that is attacking other computers, they will inform us and we will be able to contact you to assist in resolving the problem. Note that OIT only traces attacks back to your computer's address. They are not routinely scanning your computer to determine the contents of its hard drive.
How do I register?
- Connect to our network.
- Open a web browser; you will be directed to the registration home page.
- Logon using your university NetID.
- Follow the instructions on the registration page.
- Once you complete registration, your computer will be able to access the network within 30 minutes.
What are network addresses?
Every computer on the Internet, and any network using the basic protocol set of the Internet, must have at least one network address. As the basic protocol set of the internet is Transmission Control Protocol / Internet Protocol, or TCP/IP, each computer's address is commonly called an IP address. The IP address consists of four groups of numbers, separated by dots. Examples are 152.3.208.144 and 192.68.1.1. A naming scheme allows each address to be represented by a name, such as www.law.duke.edu. Names are significant for finding computers that provide network services, such as web servers, but are not as significant for your desktop computer. However, every computer, including your desktop or notebook computer, must have an IP address to communicate with other computers.
Do I have to register my office computer?
No, Computing Services will be registering all law school-owned computers. If, however, you find that you are asked to register when you start a browser on your office computer, please call us at 613-7072 and we will verify the registration.
