Law School Network Services Outage Scheduled for May 17

Reason for the Outage

Growth of the law school requires us to make more Internet addresses available for our computers and other equipment. To accomplish this, the university's Office of Information Technology (OIT) has assigned a new and different range of addresses to the law school. Computing Services will be implementing the change in addresses on Saturday, May 17, one week following graduation weekend. We have selected the date of May 17 to minimize disruption to law school activities.

Nature of the Outage

On that day, network services will be unavailable for periods of time ranging from 30 - 60 minutes. All our services, including GroupWise email, access to network files and printing, webcasts, and the CARS system will be affected. The law school's primary web site, which presently is hosted by OIT, will not be affected. We are planning to complete the work between 8:00 A.M. and noon, but it is possible that the work will extend into the day as late as 5:00 P.M.

Do users need to take any action?

Yes. Depending on the network services that you usually use, you may need to make changes on your personal computer. Please read on for details.

Novell Client File Network and Printer Access

Users who logon to Novell NetWare from their home or notebook computers need to download and run the program file available here. You may download the file at any time, but you should not run the program until 10:00 A.M. Eastern time on Saturday, May 17 or later.

GroupWise Client

Most users of the GroupWise client will not need to make any changes. If, however, the GroupWise client gives an error message that it cannot connect to the post office, once you acknowledge the error it will give you a GroupWise startup settings screen as shown here. Change the entry in the " Address" field to read "gwmail.law.duke.edu." The port field entry should remain as "1677."

Student Macintosh Users

Students who have configured their Macintosh computer printer settings to use the printers' IP addresses will need to reconfigure those settings to use the new addresses. The list of new addresses is available here.

Faculty and Staff Office Computers

Computing Services staff will be making the needed changes to office computers. However, if you discover any problems on your return to work after Saturday, please call the Computing Services help line at 613-7072 for assistance.
