What do I do if I receive an “authentication failed” error message when I’m trying to add the ControlStationPrinters with the iPrint client for Vista?

  1. Do you have Vista Service Pack 1? To check, click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties. Look in the Windows Edition section at the top right side of the window. If it is installed, you will see a reference to Windows Vista SP1 displayed. If SP 1 is no installed, use the Windows Update feature to install it. (Note that downloading and installing Service Pack 1 may take 60 - 90 minutes.)
  2. Did you open Internet Explorer as administrator by right-clicking on the IE icon and selecting "Run as administrator."
  3. Ensure the user name or login name is entered in the following style: "cn=lawid,ou=srn,o=law" omitting the quotes and substituting your own LawID where indicated

I cannot login to Novell or when I try to login to Novell I get the message “no tree or server found.”

A: A change was implemented May 17, 2008 that requires an update. Update your host file by opening the updatehost application. When prompted, save the file “updatehost.exe” to your computer then run the file. Restart your computer and you should be able to login to Novell.

I cannot connect to GroupWise or I receive the error message “Unable to connect to the TCP/IP address” or I’m seeing the following screen:

A: Change the entry in the "Address" field to read "gwmail.law.duke.edu." The port field entry should remain as "1677."

I can’t get a wireless connection.

A: First, view available wireless networks, select DUKE and choose “Connect” (and then “Connect Anyway” if prompted). Second, complete the following steps to register your computer:

  1. Open a web browser. If it does not open to the NetReg registration page, then go to Duke's Network Registration System page.
  2. Select the "Enter " button on the bottom of the page.
  3. The network will scan your computer for a few moments before it opens the NetID authentication page.
  4. Authenticate by entering your NetID and its password in the appropriate spaces.
  5. Choose "Simple Registration.”
  6. Wait a moment and the registration confirmation screen will appear.
  7. Wait 2-5 minutes, then either release and renew your computer's IP address, or restart the computer.
  8. If you have difficulty registering, contact the OIT help desk at (919)684-2200.

How do I configure my Email client (such as Outlook, Macintosh Email or Thunderbird) to check my law school or Duke NetID mail?

How do I add the law school printers?

What’s the difference between my NetID and LawID?

A: As a Duke Law Student, you have both a Duke NetID and a law school LawID, each of which provides access to specific services.

Law School Academic Technologies then issued your LawID credentials to give you access to services provided exclusively to law students. You can obtain your LawID credentials by following the instructions at our LawID credentials issuance page.

What is my Duke NetID password or how do I change it?

A: The NetID is issued by Duke's Office of Information Technology (OIT). OIT mailed your NetID credentials to your mailing address on record when you were matriculated to the university. If you have not yet received your NetID or have lost or forgotten it, please call the OIT help desk at (919) 684-2200. If you know your password, you can change it at Online@Duke.

I don’t know my law school LawID password or would like to change it.

A: Stop by the service desk on the third floor of the library.

How do I open or Convert WordPerfect Files?

A: If you are using MS Word 2007 or 2003, it includes the ability to convert WordPerfect files. Follow our instructions to install the converter pack.

Can I print double-sided documents?

A: Yes. All Student Network printers are enabled for duplex, or double-sided printing. For instructions visit the page on Double-Sided Printing.
