Install the Novell Windows Client

Introduction

The Novell NetWare client for Windows XP allows you to print to the SRN printers and access your network home directory, drive R:. The Novell Client for Windows Vista allows you to access your network home directory but does not provide printing services. Install the Novell iPrint client for Vista to enable printing to network printers . Please note that the Novell clients, including the iPrint client, do not support the Home editions of Windows Vista or XP. Your computer must be running Vista Business or Vista Ultimate, or in the case of Windows XP, XP Professional.

Install Novell Client for Windows Vista 1.0

  1. Your computer must be running Vista Business or Vista Ultimate. Novell will not work with the Vista Home editions.
  2. Open your browser to http://computing.law.duke.edu and select the Download Software link on the left navigational menu.
  3. Select "Novell Client for Windows Vista 1.0."
  4. When prompt to logon, enter your LawID and password and you will be returned to the software download page.
  5. Again select "Novell Client for Windows Vista 1.0" Save the downloaded file (NWVista.exe) to your local hard drive. You may save it to the desktop if you choose.
  6. Find the downloaded program on the hard drive and right-click on it. Select "Run as administrator" it to start installation. Installation will begin. Confirm installation when prompted.
  7. Select your language choice and from that point accept all default choices, except that if your computer uses a fingerprint reader and you are prompted whether to replace an existing GINA it with the Novell NetWare GINA then select “No." When warned that Windows can't verify the publisher of the driver software, select "Install this driver software anyway."
  8. Reboot the computer when you are prompted to do so.

Next Logon to Novell

  1. Logon to Windows.
  2. Right click on the Novell icon (the red capital "N") on the system tray (lower right of screen).
  3. Select
  4. For "Login Profile" select "<1. Students >" if you are a student and "2. Faculty/Staff" if you are either of those.
  5. Enter your LawID name in the "Username" field and your LawID password in the "Password" field.
  6. Select "OK."

Installing Novell NetWare Client for Windows XP/2000

  1. Open your browser to http://computing.law.duke.edu and select the Download Software link on the left navigational menu.
  2. Select "Novell NetWare Client for Windows XP/2000."
  3. When prompt to logon, enter your LawID and password and you will be returned to the software download page.
  4. Again select "Novell NetWare Client for Windows XP/2000." Save the downloaded file (NWClient.exe) to your local hard drive. You may save it to the desktop if you choose.
  5. Find the program on the hard drive and double-click on it to start installation. Installation will begin.  If prompted, accept the license and select "Typical Installation."
  6. Accept the default on any prompts, except if your computer uses a fingerprint reader. In that case, at some point the installation program may inform you that it has detected a third party GUI and ask whether to replace it with the Novell NetWare GUI. Select “No."
  7. Reboot the computer when you are prompted to do so.
  8. The windows logon screen will appear different than before. It will prompt you to enter the user name and password, rather than allowing you to select a displayed user name.
  9. When Windows restarts following installation you will be asked to “keep blocking” or “unblock” NDPS RPM and Notification Listener.” Select UNBLOCK.

Next, Logon to Novell

  1. After rebooting Log into Novell by right-clicking on red "N" on the Windows system tray and selecting “NetWare Login.”
  2. For "Login Profile" select "<1. Students >" if you are a student and "2. Faculty/Staff" if you are either of those.
  3. Enter your LawID name in the "Username" field and your LawID password in the "Password" field.
  4. Select "OK."
