Starting Computer for First Time

Starting your new computer for the first time.

The first time you turn on a new computer, it will display screens especially designed for the new user. These screens may vary by the operating system (e.g., Windows Vista, Windows XP, or Macintosh OS X), or manufacturer (e.g., Dell, Lenovo, Apple). Windows systems should ask you to set the Administrator password. Windows Vista will also prompt you to pick a user name and set a user password. Windows XP will not prompt you to set a password, but you should do so as soon as possible. Mac OS X will prompt you to set an Administrator password and one for your user account.

The operating system may gather other information from you, such as name and address. Read through any explanations you are provided so you can decide whether you need to or want to provide that kind of information. Windows computers may prompt you to activate Windows. If so, this is a necessary step for you to continue using Windows on the computer. Finally, the computer may offer to give you a tour of the operating system's features.
