Antivirus Software
Installing and maintaining antivirus software on your computer is crucial to protecting it from attacks. New viruses and other dangerous programs, together called "malware," are released on the Internet every day. Full protection requires that your antivirus program automatically update its virus definitions file daily.
Your computer may already have an antivirus program. The two best known ones are Norton Antivirus, part of the Norton Internet Protection Suite, and McAfee Antivirus. If you have either one of these programs on your computer and it is update in its definitions, you do not need to do anything else here. If, on the other hand, you do not have an Antivirus program, you should install one right now.
How can I tell whether one is installed?
Windows users Look at the icons on the system tray, at the bottom right of Windows. If you have an antivirus program, there should be an icon for its real-time protection function. Alternatively, you can select Start | All Programs and look for a listing for Norton, Network Associates, or McAfee.
Mac users: Look on the dock, and if you do not see an icon there, open up the applications folder on your hard drive.
I need an antivirus program. Where can I find one?
