Promoting Scholarship
The project offers support to academics thinking and writing about animal law issues. Professor Bill Reppy and adjunct faculty member Jeff Welty recently contributed to, and co-edited, a symposium about animal law to be published in Duke's leading interdisciplinary journal, Law and Contemporary Problems. Duke hosted a conference featuring symposium contributors in Spring 2006, and regularly hosts visiting speakers from other academic institutions.
Providing Expertise
Duke is recognized as a leader in animal law, and faculty working with the project are regularly asked to consult on animal law matters, contribute to statutory reform efforts, and the like.
Distinctions and Achievements
Duke has a track record of leadership in the field of animal law. It is the only school with a chaired professor working in the field, and the only top-tier school with multiple professors focused on animal law issues. Duke is one of five leading law schools to be awarded a substantial grant by Bob Barker to promote the study of animal law.
The Animal Law Project is one of three nationwide, and is unique in that it is not tied to any single organization; rather, it offers students the opportunity to learn about animal law in a variety of practice settings. One of Duke Law School's leading journals, Law and Contemporary Problems, published a symposium issue on animal law. Additionally, the animal law conference held at Duke in the spring of 2006, further cements Duke's status as a moving force in animal law.
In short, Duke is at the forefront of this important field. But it cannot remain so without your help.
