Ecology's Golden Anniversary: From "Silent Spring" to "A Force for Nature" † The Modern Environmental Movement draws from much older traditions, but the distinctive aspect of it since the publication of "Silent Spring" has been its emphasis on ecology. The scientific study of relationships between organisms and their natural environment really exploded following the publication of Rachel Carson's "Silent Spring." The policy response to this study led to the creation of many of the laws and law practice specializations which we call Environmental Law. Last Year, John H. Adams '62 and his wife Patricia Adams published an account of the history of the Natural Resources Defense Council titled, "A Force for Nature." Professors Ryke Longest and Michelle Nowlin '92 of the Duke Environmental Law and Policy Clinic will discuss the role that the Adams' work at NRDC has played in the past fifty years in influencing environmental policy generally. Ryke and Michelle will also highlight the ways in which the Duke Environmental Law and Policy Clinic's students are building on this legacy to influence environmental policy. Lend your voice (and visage) to our growing archive of oral histories. The Duke Law Oral History Project chronicles the Law School's history through video interviews with the students and faculty who have lived it. Whether you share a memory of your favorite professor or most dreaded class, an embarrassing moment or a life-changing experience, we hope you will commit your memories to our permanent record! Videos are posted to the Duke Law Oral History project website. View photographs from the Law School's archives, and help identify old classmates and friends. Dean Levi will discuss his vision for the Law School and answer alumni questions during this informal session. In its first two years of full-time operation, the Duke Law School's Wrongful Convictions Clinic helped exonerate two men who had spent a combined 30 years in prison for crimes they did not commit. The Center's two lawyers - Professors James Coleman and Theresa Newman '88 - will be joined by a Clinic student and at least one of the exonerated men in a discussion about the Clinic's work in identifying, investigating, and correcting wrongful convictions. Using actual cases of wrongful convictions, the panel will highlight what factors led to the erroneous convictions and what steps were taken to rectify the errors. The panel will also survey the primary causes of wrongful convictions and describe the inter-disciplinary work being done at Duke to study decision-making at every stage of the criminal justice system, beginning with the identification of the alleged perpetrator of a crime and ending with the prosecutors' and judges' review of a post-conviction claim for relief. The hope is that this research will produce the bases for significant criminal justice reform.
