Intellectual Property and Cyberlaw Law Society: IP Symposium
The 9th annual Hot Topics in Intellectual Property Symposium will once again focus on cutting edge issues in intellectual property law. This symposium provides opportunities for discussion and interaction among Duke students and faculty, visiting professors, legal practitioners, and technology industry leaders. Six (6) sponsorships of $2,500 are needed for this event.
Duke Journal of Gender Law & Policy Symposium
The Duke Journal of Gender Law & Policy's 2010 symposium will focus on current developments related to gender and the law. Three separate panels are planned on topics which may include current developments in the political arena, family law (such as California Proposition 8), and criminal law (such as sexual and physical abuse). The event's speakers will also be published in the journal's spring issue. In conjunction with the Women Law Student Association, the symposium will also feature a lunchtime panel. Two (2) sponsorships of $2,500 are needed for this event.
Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law Symposium
This event brings the authors of the Journal's spring symposium edition to Duke Law to present their articles and seek feedback from the attendees and other authors. This will be an all-day event discussing issues of comparative and international law. Two (2) sponsorships of $2,500 are needed for this event.
Duke Law Journal 2009-2010 Symposium
DLJ's 40th Annual Administrative Law Symposium will take place in February. This year's symposium will focus on 'Immigration Adjudication' from the perspective of federal judges, academics, and government officials from both the previous and current administration. Potential topics include the value of judicial review of immigration judge and Board of Immigration Appeals' decisions, what the scope of review should be, how much Congress's plenary power should affect the way we view immigration law, and how immigration law has been used as antiterrorism law. Four (4) sponsorships of $2,500 are needed for this event.
Women Law Student Association Annual Speaker Series
This four part speaker series is titled "From Law School to Lawyer" and focuses on the transition from student to professional. Topics include opportunities students have in law school and how they will impact their professional transition, sponsors conducting mock interviews followed by constructive advice, working in a large firm, and addressing the job search. Three (3) sponsorships of $2,500 are needed for this event.
Duke Law Journal Orientation
Duke Law Journal will host a 1 ½ day training session which includes a broad overview of the publication process, bluebooking training, and an introduction to the note requirement. This training will familiarize incoming staff to their role and responsibilities on the DLJ. One (1) sponsorship of $2,500 is needed for this event.
Hispanic Law Students Association: Cuba Conference
The Hispanic Law Students Association will host a conference to raise awareness and interest in Cuba. This conference will address the current legal and political issues that are developing as a result of the changing relationship between the United States and Cuba. One (1) sponsorship of $2,500 is needed for this event.
Alaska Law Review: Annual Trip to Alaska
In March, second-year members of the Alaska Law Review travel to Alaska to meet with practicing attorneys and judges in the Alaska legal community. Journal members recruit authors for upcoming issues, touch base with authors from previous issues, and gather ideas for student notes. The trip is invaluable in helping the Alaska Law Review meet the needs of the readers it serves and in helping journal members understand the substantive impact their publication can have on the development of Alaska law. Three (3) sponsorships of $2,500 are needed for this program.
4th Annual DONE Awards: Duke Bar Association
4th Annual DONE Awards, coordinated by the Duke Bar Association, will solicit nominations from the entire student body for the most outstanding student leaders and organizations, and for the 'Distinguished Teaching Award,' given to the most outstanding professor for the year. This event draws capacity crowds of students, faculty, and staff. One (1) sponsorship of $2,500 is needed for this event.
Duke Moot Court Awards Banquet
This annual end of the year awards banquet both celebrates the Moot Court Board's success for the year and is a send off for the 3L board members. One (1) sponsorship of $2,500 is needed for this event.
Duke Forum for Law & Social Change Symposium
The Duke Forum for Law & Social Change will host its second conference focusing on the dynamic nature of racial and religious discrimination. This year's symposium is titled "The New Face of Discrimination: 'Muslim' in America." Three (3) sponsorships of $2,500 are needed for this event.
Annual Duke Forum for Law & Social Change Sponsorship
Two Town Hall Forums (one in fall and one in spring) will bring together community members for candid discussions of timely topics, the Forum's orientation activities for new members in August, spring recruiting efforts, and any other events DFLSC plans throughout the year or needs that may arise. Our theme for Volume II is 'Muslim' in America: the New Face of Discrimination." One (1) sponsorship of $2,500 is needed for these events.
Social Enterprise Initiative Conference
SEI plans to hold a conference at Duke for which they will invite a number of speakers to discuss topics related to the growing fields of for-profit and non-profit social enterprise and social entrepreneurship. Possible topics include the role attorneys can play in startup and growing social enterprises, but are also interested in speakers who will discuss growing policy concerns related to social enterprises and nonprofits. Two (2) sponsorships of $2,500 are needed for this event.
Duke Journal of Constitutional Law and Public Policy Conference The Duke Journal of Constitutional Law and Public Policy plans to host a conference titled "Preliminarily titled Drawing Lines: The Future of Redistricting in America" and will feature three panel discussions and a keynote speaker. The panels will be organized around three important subtopics: the future of the majority-minority district, the use of computers in redistricting, and possibilities for a political redistricting. These panels will include scholars from the legal and political science fields, as well as state officials involved in redistricting. Four (4) sponsorships of $2,500 are needed for this event.
Social Enterprise Initiative: NetImpact Conference, Ithaca NY
This conference is designed for students and professionals interested in using business and legal skills for social and environmental change and we would like to send four members of our group to attend. The conference presents a number of networking opportunities for those interested in social entrepreneurship. Our hope is to build relationships that will allow the Social Enterprise Initiative to have a lasting clinical existence at Duke Law. One (1) sponsorship of $2,500 is needed for this event.
Women in the Law Symposium
WLSA will host a symposium that addresses how law school affects women's psyches, emotions, and perceptions. In addition to these items, they will also discuss the differences for women in the classroom and career advancement. One (1) sponsorship of $2,500 is needed for this event.
Leadership Retreat with the Office of Student Affairs
The 8th annual Leadership Retreat is a weekend-long retreat for Duke Law School's current and aspiring leaders. The weekend includes leadership and communication workshops and team building exercises as well as outdoor activities. Two (2) sponsorships of $5,000 are needed for this event.
Duke Moot Court: Student Speaker Series
The Moot Court Speaker Series will feature biweekly public speaking presentations in various forms (oral arguments with judges, class presentations, speeches, debates, etc.). Any student who wishes to have the opportunity to practice their public speaking will be welcome. Comments and suggestions will be offered by any student in attendance, but specifically by members of the Moot Court Board. One (1) sponsorship of $2,500 is needed for this series.

Duke Bar Association: Mentor Mentee Program
Through a combination of events, such as a welcome barbecue, coffee dates, and mentor-mentee lunches, this program aims to facilitate mentor / mentee relationships between Duke Law students. The Mentor Mentee Program matches 1L's and foreign LLM students with 2L or 3L mentors to provide advice and help them through their first year of Law School. Two (2) sponsorships of $2,500 are needed for this program.
Journal Interest Barbecue hosted by the Duke Journal of Comparative & International Law
This event is designed to inform 1L's about journal opportunities. It will bring together all journals and their representatives and offer information on respective journals. One (1) sponsorship of $2,500 is needed for this event.
Duke Bar Association: Talent Review
DBA partners with the Office of Admissions to bring together current students, admitted students, faculty, and alumni during Admitted Students Weekend. Members of Duke Law Community perform various talents, such as singing, comedic routines, and choreographed dance. This event requires extensive advertising beginning in February to admitted students, faculty, alumni, and current students. For the past two years, proceeds from this event have benefited the Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF). Two (2) sponsorships of $2,500 are needed for this event.
Spring Journal Recruitment hosted by Duke Law Journal
The two parts of spring recruitment include a panel of the editors in chief from each journal who describe their publication's content and set forth criteria for membership and a journal fair where each journal sets up a table and talks informally with 1Ls interested in membership. Duke Bar Association: First Fridays
First Friday is a monthly event that connects current students, alumni, and faculty. It offers the Duke Law community the opportunity to network, socialize, and capitalize on its outstanding members. Occurring on the first Friday of each month, this event has become a new tradition in the Duke Law community. One (1) sponsorship of $2,500 is needed for this event.
Duke Bar Association: Class Parties
Class parties are an annual event for 1L, 2L, and 3L students. Class representatives plan these socials for each class. One (1) sponsorship of $2,500 is needed for this event.
Dedicated to Durham
Dedicated to Durham is a school-wide community service tradition that takes place every semester. Faculty and students come together to work on community service sites throughout the city of Durham. These involve up to twenty sites and activities include building a fence in a public park, planting a community garden, and helping out the local food bank, among others. After a full day's work, participants return to the Law School for a reception. Two (2) sponsorships of $5,000 are needed for this event.
Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF) Annual Auction & Gala
The PILF Auction & Gala has typically been the organization's most profitable fundraising activity. This event normally coincides with Duke Law Parents' Weekend in February. You can support PILF by (1) attending the auction, (2) bidding on an item, (3) donating an item, (4) sponsoring the auction, or (5) volunteering.
Race Judicata: PILF
The Second Annual Duke Law Race Judicata is a 5K run/walk around Duke’s campus and finishing at the law school. It is a festive community event, featuring live music, food, team competitions and prizes. All funds raised go to support the Public Interest Law Foundation (PILF). Southern Justice Spring Break Trip
Southern Justice Spring Break is one of the cornerstones of public interest work at Duke Law. Every March, with considerable help from donors and Duke's Office of Public Interest and Pro Bono, students travel to sites across the South to conduct pro bono legal work and community service. Participants travel to rural Kentucky to work on coal mining and poverty related issues; to Atlanta to conduct anti-death penalty work; to Jackson, Miss. for prisoner's rights work; and to New Orleans, La. and coastal Mississippi for a variety of Gulf Coast Hurricane relief projects. Eight (8) Sponsorships of $2,500 are needed for this event.
SOLIMENA Conference
SOLIMENA (Student Organization for Legal Issues in the Middle East and North Africa) will host their second annual two day conference with a combination of keynote speakers and panelists. Last year's topic centered around the many issues in Darfur. One (1) sponsorship of $2,500 is needed for this event.
ESQ Career Symposium: Organized by the Business Law Society
ESQ is an annual event held in January where Duke Law students can meet alumni to discuss career opportunities. Small groups of students meet with panels of alumni. The panels are organized by themes relevant to students (for example securities litigation, sports law, pro bono, and environmental law). Last year nearly 200 students and 25 alumni participated. One (1) sponsorships of $5,000 is needed for this event.
Blueprint for Professional and Summer Success
In February, the Career & Professional Development Center and organizations from around the country and abroad give 2Ls concrete tips on identifying and securing the summer job of their choice. During the employer expo and reception, students forge personal relationships with professionals to get a head start on interviewing and outreach this summer. Duke Moot Court
Help the team compete in eight different tournaments around the country. Six (6) sponsorships of $2,500 are needed for these events.
Mock Trial: Motion Argument Competition (Formal name depending on sponsoring firm)
The name for this competition for 1L's will depend on your sponsorship. The competition will focus on arguing a motion before student judges and will use the spring semester writing assignment for first year students. One (1) sponsorship of $2,500 is needed for this event.
Mock Trial Tournaments
Because of their recent success, the Duke Mock Trial Team has been invited to a record number of tournaments. Help the team as they compete around the country in various tournaments. Six (6) sponsorships of $2,500 are needed for these events.
Duke Law School Clinical Program
Working together in the clinical suite, the real-client clinical courses operate as a public interest law firm, providing students challenging opportunities to deepen their substantive legal knowledge, strengthen their lawyering skills, and build their professional identities.
