This overview lists the steps necessary for Windows XP users to complete the orientation. They are presented in their suggested completion order; however, you may have already completed some of them. You will need your Duke NetID and password. If you come to a step which you already have completed, simply skip it and proceed to the next step.

Each step contains links to pages with more detailed information and instructions for completing that step. As you complete a step, place a check in the corresponding checkbox. Good luck and remember to contact us if you should get bogged down.

Step 1: Optional - Set a Windows Password

• Verify that you have set a Windows password for all user accounts. » Instructions.

Step 2: Protect Your Computer from Viruses and Malware

• Verify whether you have an anti-virus program, such as Norton Antivirus or McAfee Virusscan, on your computer. If not, install McAfee Virusscan. After installing McAfee VirusScan with patch 3, we highly recommend installing the Antispyware Module. The antispyware module will guard your computer from malware and spyware that VirusScan would not otherwise detect. We recommend that you update your virus protection software often. » Instructions

Step 3: Configure Law School Computing Features

1. Install ePrint printers (this is the preferred printing solution). » Instructions

2. Optional - Configure Microsoft Word to open Corel WordPerfect documents. » Instructions

3. Optional - Save a Backup Copy in MS Office. » Instructions

Step 4: Review and Update Your University Profile

1. Verify your email alias and you can access Blackboard.» Instructions

2. If you already updated your personal information in ACES, then this step is optional. If you have not, then please complete this step. Update your university directory information at ACES. Be sure to enter your current postal mailing address.

Step 5: Storing Your Data Files

1. Installing and using Webfiles: Webfiles is a safe and convenient place to store your data files. It is also accessible from anywhere you have Internet access. » Instructions

2. Other storage options: Need or want additional storage? There are many organizations that provide this service including Mozy. For more information visit mozy.com.

Step 6: Check Your Email and Optionally Configure an Email Client

1. Access your email with a web browser at http://exchange.oit.duke.edu.

2. Optionally install and configure an email client for downloading mail. There are several email downloads available from OIT. Please visit the Exchange setup page for more information.

3. Check your superseded Duke email account at http://www.mail.duke.edu. You must forward to your new mailbox (use your standard Duke address) any email that you wish to keep before September 9, 2011.

When you've completed the above items, you are finished with computing orientation.
